In Memoriam
Our Teacher Will Never Be Forgotten
Kaicho Hatsuo Royama
1948 – 2026 · Founder of Kyokushin-Kan
Kaicho Hatsuo Royama walked into Mas Oyama’s original dojo in 1963 at fifteen years old and never left the path. He became one of Kyokushin’s great champions and one of the last direct links to the generation that built the art — the man who made the low kick a cornerstone of full-contact karate.
After Sosai Oyama’s passing in 1994, Kaicho founded Kyokushin-Kan to protect what he believed mattered most: not popularity or expansion, but the original principles of Budo. He was demanding and deeply compassionate, and he taught that karate begins with respect, grows through hardship, and becomes a way of living.
He was Shihan Tom Callahan’s teacher, and it was Kaicho who promoted him to Rokudan. Everything we practice at World Budo Arts carries his instruction forward. Osu, Kaicho. Thank you for everything.
