Kyoshi Shihan Tom Callahan

6th Dan, Founder of World Budo Arts

Shihan Callahan is a long-time martial artist and instructor who currently holds a 6th dan (black belt) rank and the honorific title "Kyoshi Shihan" within Kyokushin-Kan International. He serves as Chairman for the U.S. branch of Kyokushin-Kan (USA Chairman), and as International Secretary and Vice-Chairman for "All Americas" under the organization. As a senior instructor and international official, Shihan Callahan plays a vital role in connecting dojos across the world, especially linking the U.S. branch with global affiliates.

As an instructor and leader, Shihan Callahan emphasizes that teaching Karate is "more than showing how to punch or kick." He believes in guiding students in character, mental discipline, and life—not just physical technique. His teaching style encourages awareness of each student's individual needs and background. He sees a dojo class as more than just physical training, recognizing that students often look to instructors as mentors. He blends traditional Karate with supplementary training, having further studied Krav Maga, Israeli-jiujitsu, and Jukkendo to broaden his expertise beyond Kyokushin.

Through his school and organization World Budo Arts, Shihan Callahan works to spread "budo spirit," promoting martial arts as a path for personal growth, discipline, and community—beyond competitive fighting. His background, which blends Western upbringing and an international outlook, represents how Karate and traditional Japanese martial arts have global reach and cross-cultural influence. For many practitioners, instructors like Shihan Callahan help bridge the gap between traditional "dojo culture" and modern global martial-arts communities, emphasizing both physical training and character development.
